Setouchi Triennale, Japan
“The Festival of the Deity ” Theatre
The Setouchi Triennale is a contemporary international art festival held across the islands of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. In 2019, Yunfire INFERNO Fire Dance Troupe represented Taiwan in this festival’s performances.
Responding to the Setouchi Triennale’s core focus on maritime culture, The Festival of the Deity draws inspiration from the Mazu mythology. Through fire dance and musical theatre, it showcases the inclusiveness of Taiwanese culture—much like the vast ocean—and the vitality of folk beliefs.

Since 2013, the Setouchi Triennale in Japan has extended its reach across the seas through the Asian Art Platform, connecting the islands of the Seto Inland Sea with Asia and beyond, creating a meeting ground for diverse cultures.
Within this platform, the Taiwan Historical Resources Management Society has played a key role in linking Taiwan to the world. Over the years, it has organized art teams from Taiwan, bringing together outstanding artists, architects, and youth groups such as the Little Ox Team to Fukuda, Japan, for artistic creation and cultural exchange workshops.
In 2019, through the opportunity of the Setouchi Triennale, INFERNO Fire Dance Troupe joined hands with partners from the Silver Mazu Association to perform The Festival of the Sea God. Combining fire dance with traditional folk arts, we shared the stories and spirit of our culture with audiences on this enchanting island.
